What is Digital Pen and
Paper Technology?
A digital pen writes on paper like any normal
pen. The difference is that it captures everything you write. The pen can send
what you have written to a computer for storage and processing, or as an email
or fax. Applications range from: removing the need to re-key forms, to
automatically storing and indexing pages written in a note-book. You can even
send faxes and emails by simply writing them with a pen.
The digital pens include a tiny camera, some memory, a CPU and a communications
unit. The paper is also special in that it needs to have an almost invisible dot
pattern printed on it. You could use your laser to print this or get a
specialist stationery printer to do it. Many paper products from
3M yellow Sticky Notes to
Black n' Red Notebooks are already available with the pattern
pre-printed on them. The pen senses the pattern and this is how it knows where
on the page you are writing.
Most importantly using the digital pen is as easy as a normal pen with the quite
significant benefit that a digital record is simultaneously created as you
write. To trial the technology we suggest you purchase a
Nokia SU-1B pen. These have some very nice desktop software
applications integrating the pen with Microsoft Word and Outlook as well as a
searchable note-book application.
